Anne Arundel County: Retirement Options Galore
There are many areas of the country that are known for offering a lot to senior citizens as far as housing is concerned. But when it comes down to it, Anne Arundel County may be the king. At this time there are over 5,000 homes planned for construction or already in the process of being built. Out of these, approximately 60 percent of them have restrictions that do not allow residents under the age of 55. These are known as plus 55 communities.
While this may sound like a good thing for seniors, county officials are a bit worried that this is going to lead to an imbalance in the age population. After all, if things continue in this direction the county will be more or less dominated by those that are over the age of 55.
Although plus 55 communities have always been popular in Anne Arundel County, zoning rules surrounding local school district capacities are driving developers to cater to more and more active adults.
Once a school has reached its capacity, developers cannot move forward with unrestricted building projects. In turn, building plus 55 communities is the next best option. The only other thing that they can do is wait around for the capacity to open up, but there is no way of saying how long this could take.
Builders in the area are making quick money on the plus 55 communities that they build. With baby boomers looking for a place to settle down after retirement, these communities are filling up faster than ever before.
It will be interesting to see if county officials do anything about this issue, or simply keep a close watch on the progression of this market.
